Twitter at the time of crisis

I was switching from one news site to another when i noticed that some of the big news sites like bbc and cnn where taking feeds from twitter on mumbai attacks. I was impressed to learn that so many users present in mumbai were covering each and every development there on twitter. Here are some tweeds noticed on the bbc news site,

New : Gmail themes

Google has rolled out around 30 different themes for gmail. May not be very useful to the end user, but there is no denying that whatever google rolls out becomes popular.

conversation, collaboration and confusion

Nice pic submitted by brian solis. click to enlarge.

It talks about collaboration and conversation; I couldn't help but add the term "confusion" also as a by-product to it ;-)

Long tail : How long can we ignore it

According to the latest Hitwise data, the top 1000 search terms only account for 10% of the search traffic. It still beats my imagination why don't the online application service providers take the long tail seriously. The launch of any new application/feature is dependent on the usage expectations. I think the important question should be how useful the feature/application is, rather than how many would use it. If it is any good, you will see the results.

What's the buzz around OpenID ?

Pretty late in the day to write on OpenID, but it caught my attention only when the biggies like yahoo, google and microsoft have endorsed the concept.

FusionCharts - Charting component

Was going through a website when i noticed various cool charts on it. Was able to figure out that they were from fusion charts. Fusion charts is a charting component built on flash by a company called InfoSoft Global. It can be used with ASP, PHP, ColdFusion, JSP, RoR and also with simple html. The best part is, you don't need flash knowledge to build complex graphs using fusion charts. All you need is the knowledge of any of the above listed programming languages or scripts. Besides web, it can also be used in powerpoint presentations.

Mashup of media

Internet as a medium has come a long way in india and it still has a long way to go. Come to think of it, i hardly know anybody in this generation who has a name and don't have an email id. Information dissemination was made possible and simple with the growing internet penetration. For the last 5 -6 yrs people, and organizations in particular, are not leaving any stone unturned to establish internet presence and disseminate information to the masses.

Yahoo! Internet Location Platform

With more and more web applications and services concentrating on location based services, the geographic location database is gaining significance day by day. It is becoming imperative for applications to provide location based services. This is another step towards "understanding" the user, and thereby extracting the real "intent" for the service request. Location based services providing personalized solutions, targeted advertising etc are the order of the day.

Playing with RSS

I was wondering how i could save my time spent in sniffing through hundreds of sites to gather latest news. I decided to use igoogle and aggregate feeds news feeds onto the igoogle desktop. Now the problem was that i had too many portlets (or windows) on my desktop each providing feeds specific to a particulra website. It was again waste of time to go through these different portlets, which sometimes had redundant news feeds.

Twitter - stay live

I had read about twitter a year ago, but didn't pay much attention to it as i thought it is just another web 2.0 (mis) adventure. Few days back, i was thinking of writing a script that would allow me to display my current status, that is, whatever i am doing in that particular minute, on my site. I can keep everyone updated through an IM, but thought of using my site to broadcast it to everyone. You go to my site to see what i am upto (right panel). Before writing the script, the obvious thing was to check if any such thing existed.
